On the 30th of June 1998 Paul Hackett took a picture of five men alleged to have been involved in the killing of black teenager, Stephen Lawrence. It was used on all of the UK’s major newspapers, but was thought too violent to make the front page. This audio montage focusses on Paul Hackett’s infamous news photograph of the ‘Lawrence Five’.

In 2012 David Norris (centre rear of photo, wearing blue shirt) and Gary Dobson were convicted of murdering Stephen Lawrence. As they were juveniles at the time of the offence, they were sentenced to be ‘detained at Her Majesty’s pleasure’, the equivalent of a life sentence.
