This is an extremely personal piece based on my first experience of pregnancy. It could form part of a national project arming first time mothers with the kit to record their experiences first hand showing fascinating differences across regions, age, class and race.
I could see a project developed possibly in partnership with a government initiative like SureStart or City Learning Centres, with training incorporated into the production schedule. Expectant or young mothers could be loaned minidiscs and given basic training and then asked to produce soundscapes including monologues based on the experience of being pregnant or a mother. A national project such as this could be interesting as regional, class and cultural differences would surface. It would also serve to arm young mothers with valuable ITC skills and confidence.
